That makes for a pretty good movie, if not a very accurate reality. It isn't quite enough to keep two hours going, however, and so the big picture here is to enjoy what it has.
A quick comparison might be made to "The Hustler" and related pool shark movies. And like that classic, "Rounders" is about charming deceit.
Matt Damon is the main man here, an ex-poker champ who has "gone straight" until his former partner in crime, Ed Norton, gets out of jail and ropes him back into the thrills and malevolence.
Like the pool movies, and like the glitzier and more ambitious "Oceans" movies, personalities matter most. The setting, the glint of money, and most of all the plots matter less than you'd think.
So everything is pretty good along those lines, partly because Damon is fun to be with and Norton is simply terrific.
An embarrassing appearance in the beginning and end of the movie by an overacting John Malkovich gets in the way of Damon's performance, however.
This is the result of having to make more of the story that was ever there. The main idea--that the two leads get into money trouble and have to earn a ton of cash in a few days of wild poker games--is eventually actually a bit of a bore.
The gamesmanship is always interesting, of course, but the impetus behind it grows old. It's an interesting story.
Matt Damon plays a kid who to be a card hustler. He turns his life around and is on the way to becoming a lawyer when he gets sucked back into the underworld of card sharking.
Matt Damon makes you like his character. Ed Norton makes you hate his. John Malkovich is Plan on being creeped out by him.
It's what he does. It's just a fantastic movie. I saw this in the theater when it first came out and still remember leaving the theater impressed.
I've watched it numerous times over the years and it holds up well over time. I still do not understand why this is a generally unknown movie. Rounders is about two friends in a tough situation.
Mike Matt Damon is a law student who loves poker. Worm Edward Norton is a hustler just out of prison who has a large debt.
He thinks that together they can make enough money to get him out of trouble. Norton does a great job playing a slimeball.
The poker is also fun to watch. It all makes for a great combination and an effective story. One person found this helpful. Worm finally confesses that Grama is working for KGB.
With their lives in danger, Worm decides to flee, but Mike returns to the city, cutting ties with Worm. Mike asks Grama for more time, to no avail.
Mike asks Knish for the money but is refused out of principle. During the conversation with Knish, Mike reveals his motivation for taking the ill-fated risk at KGB's club and why he thinks he can compete and possibly win the World Series of Poker.
He even quotes Worm saying that Knish "sees all the angles but doesn't have the stones to play any" after Knish had already refused to help financially.
Mike changes his mind and decides to continue playing. Mike doubles the blinds at the risk of losing everything to KGB again, and possibly his life.
Irate at the missed chance to win it all, KGB begins to play on "tilt". In the final hand, Mike baits a boastful KGB into going all-in, and defeats him with a nut straight.
In the UK, the rules of rounders are regulated by Rounders England. The bases are marked with posts, which batters must keep in contact with and fielders must 'stump', and only one 'good' ball needs to be thrown before a batter must run.
The fielding team must field a minimum of six players one on each base plus bowler and catcher. The total number of players on a team is limited to nine.
The ball circumference must be between millimetres 7. The bases are laid out in a manner similar to a baseball diamond, except that batters run to a separate fourth base, at right-angles to third base and the batsman's base.
If a ball is delivered well, batters must try to hit the ball and must run regardless of whether the ball is hit. If the ball is hit into the backward area, the batter may not pass first post until the ball is returned to the forward area.
A batter that hits a no-ball may not be caught out or stumped at the first post. Batters may run on 'no-balls' but do not have to. Each batter, except the last in each inning, is entitled to receive one good ball: the last batter is entitled to receive three good balls unless he or she is caught out.
One rounder is gained if the player hits the ball, then reaches the fourth post and touches it before the next ball is bowled and is not caught out and hit by the ball.
A half rounder is gained if: the player reaches the fourth post having missed the ball; the player reaches the second post having hit the ball; if a batter is obstructed by a fielder whilst running; or if the same batter has two consecutive no balls.
A batter is out if a fielder catches the ball after it has been hit and before it touches the ground, a fielder touches the post of the base halfway up or higher with the ball while the batter is running to it, the batter deliberately drops or throws the bat, or another batter runs to the same base or overtakes a batter, in which case both batters are out.
